Planned speed reduction on dangerous Conwy road welcomed

Clwyd West MS Darren Millar has welcomed plans to reduce the speed limit on a dangerous stretch of road in his constituency.

It was announced last week that Conwy County Council has proposed a Traffic Regulation Order (TRO) to cut the speed on a 4km stretch of the A548, between Llanfair Talhaiarn and Llangernyw, from 60mph to 40mph.

The TRO will include the dangerous junction at Waterloo Hill.

Darren has raised the issue of speeding along this stretch a number of times over the years with Conwy Council. He has also discussed the issue with the community council.

In May 2024,  David Paul Langford, from Llandudno, died in a crash on the road, which resulted in Kate Robertson, assistant coroner for North Wales east and central, writing to Conwy County Borough Council in December 2025 - following an inquest - urging them to take action.

Welcoming the planned speed reduction, Darren said:

"I was thrilled to hear that Conwy Council have listened to all the concerns raised regarding this stretch, including my own, and have now proposed a Traffic Regulation Order to reduce the speed limit.

"There have been too many accidents along this dangerous stretch of road over the years, and devastatingly, in 2024, it resulted in the death of a young father.

"A reduced speed limit will be very much welcomed by the local community, and I also personally look forward to seeing these safety measures implemented, making this part of the A548 safer for all."
