Stroke Prevention Day – People urged to get their blood pressure checked

Leader of the Welsh Conservatives and Clwyd West MS Darren Millar is encouraging people in Conwy and Denbighshire to get their blood pressure checked regularly.

Today (January 30th) is Stroke Prevention Day 2025 and this year the focus is on high blood pressure, the biggest risk factor for stroke.

Darren said:

“High blood pressure plays a part in about half of all strokes, which is why the Stroke Association is encouraging people to have their blood pressure regularly checked.

“Those with high readings can aim to drive down their blood pressure by reducing salt intake, regularly exercising, and reviewing alcohol consumption, and smokers can cut back or quit completely.”

He added:

“A stroke happens when the blood supply to part of the brain is cut off, killing brain cells. Damage to the brain can affect how the body works. It can also change how you think and feel. The effects of a stroke depend on where it takes place in the brain, and how big the damaged area is.

“Stroke can be life-changing. It can happen to anyone of any age and affects everyone in different ways. It is therefore crucial that we take action to prevent it where we can, so please find out your risk level by having a blood pressure check – it could save your life.”

Juliet Bouverie OBE, CEO of the Stroke Association, said:

“We’re encouraging adults of any age to get their blood pressure checked on a regular basis. This will equip them with knowledge on whether they are at risk of having a stroke or not, so they can take any necessary steps to reduce their chances, if required.”

How to reduce your risk of high blood pressure:

On top of medication, healthy lifestyle changes can often help to lower your blood pressure even more.

Reduce your salt intake.

Eat a healthy diet.

Stop smoking.

Stay a healthy weight.

Be more active.

Drink alcohol within the recommended limits.

A stroke is a medical emergency. If you spot the signs of stroke, call 999.
