Clwyd West AM and Shadow Health Minister Darren Millar is calling on Conwy County Borough Council to work with the NHS and take action to postpone the closure of a Rhos-on-Sea nursing home which was announced this week.
Families of residents of Highcroft Nursing Home in Whitehall Road, along with staff, were called to a meeting at the home on Tuesday morning and told that the home is no longer viable and will therefore be closing on November 30th 2014.
Darren, who has been contacted by concerned families, is calling on the local authority to work together with the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board to postpone any closure until the end of the year in order to help families to make alternative care arrangements for their loved ones and to support staff facing redundancy in the run up to the Christmas period.
He said:
"Clearly the decision to close Highcroft Nursing Home is a huge blow to hardworking staff and also to residents of the home and their families, who now face the prospect of finding suitable new homes in the locality by the end of the month.
"Given the vulnerability of the residents, I have contacted both Conwy County Borough Council and the Health Board urging them to work together to postpone the closure so that families have sufficient time to find alternative suitable accommodation to meet the needs of their loved ones in the local area."
He added:
"I have visited Highcroft on a number of occasions over the years and cannot speak too highly of the wonderful staff there. Delaying the closure would also allow them time to search for alternative employment."
