Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has welcomed the start of the second phase of flood defence work to protect homes and businesses in Kinmel Bay which were affected by flooding in December 2013 and hit by storms last January.
Following calls by Darren, Conwy County Borough Council was awarded £1.28m from the Welsh Government to make improvements along the promenade in Kinmel Bay to protect local homes and businesses from the sea.
The first phase, which involved replenishing beach levels, was completed last year and phase two got underway on Monday.
The latest works are expected to take six weeks to complete and therefore a complete closure of the promenade is now in place until February 23rd.
A diversion will remain in place for the duration of the works directing the general public across the footbridge to the caravan park at the Sandy Cove area and through the sand dunes by the Golden Sand Holiday Park.
Darren said:
“I am sure that the people of Kinmel Bay will join me in welcoming the start of the phase two of this vital work, which involves improvements to the secondary defences along the promenade, a new floodgate near the Kinmel Dunes Nature Reserve Car Park, and mobility/cycling access ramps.
“Residents have been extremely concerned that their homes could be hit by flooding again and reducing the risk of floods will certainly help to give them peace of mind. Whilst nobody can control the weather, we can is ensure that the best protection from flooding is in place.”
