Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called for Welsh Government action to ensure a proper commemoration of the Holocaust next year.
Darren Millar raised the matter in the Senedd this week following a recent visit to the Yad Vashem Holocaust Museum in Jerusalem, where he attended seminars held by leading academics in his capacity as Chair of the National Assembly’s Cross Party Group on Faith.
He said:
“Next year marks the seventieth anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz and Birkenau at the end of World War 2. What work is the Welsh Government doing to mark that particular occasion, and what support will you be giving to the Holocaust Commission and the Holocaust Memorial Day Trust to enable a programme of activities across Wales?”
The Communities Minister Lesley Griffiths AM assured Darren that discussions will be held in the very near future “ to see what is wanted, what is required, and to take that forward.”
Darren added:
“It is vital that we remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust and I welcome the Minister’s response and hope this is carried through to ensure a proper commemoration of the Holocaust across Wales next year.
Holocaust Memorial Day takes place on 27th January each year. For more information and resources visit www.hmd.org.uk.
