With people throughout the country set to remember the millions killed in the Holocaust tomorrow, Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has met with a Llandudno man who survived the genocide of approximately six million Jews by the Nazi regime and its collaborators.
Darren met with Henry Ferster, who survived several Nazi concentration camps and also spent some time in Auschwitz, at an event in Emmanuel Christian Centre in Llandudno on Sunday evening.
Mr Ferster told his tragic story in North Wales just days before Holocaust Memorial Day (27 January), a national commemoration day in the United Kingdom dedicated to the remembrance of those who suffered in the Holocaust, under Nazi Persecution, and in subsequent genocides in Cambodia, Rwanda, Bosnia and Darfur.
Darren said:
“It is vital that we remember the millions of people killed in the Holocaust and it was an absolute privilege to meet with Henry on Sunday. His story was a sad but powerful reminder of why it is crucial for us to mark Holocaust Memorial Day.
“This year marks the 70th anniversary of the liberation of Auschwitz-Birkenau and 2015 will also be the 20th anniversary of the Genocide in Srebrenica, Bosnia. It is particularly appropriate that the theme for this major anniversary year is ‘Keep the memory alive.’
“Everyone should learn lessons from Nazi persecution and subsequent genocides in order to challenge hatred and create a safer future.”
