Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has hit out at plans to permanently close a GP surgery in Towyn.
Maes Gwyn Surgery on Towyn Road used to be open between 9am and 12 noon from Monday to Friday. However it has been closed for several months now as the building was deemed not fit for purpose.
Darren had hoped that an alternative premises in the town would be found, but has been informed by the Practice Manager ,Peter Dutton, this week that this will not be the case and that letters are being sent out to patients informing them of proposals to close the branch premises at Towyn and centralise all services at the medical centre in Kinmel Bay.
Darren has sent a letter to the practice voicing his concerns about the plans.
He said:
“Towyn is home to a significant number of elderly residents, many of whom live with chronic conditions, have demanding health needs and have mobility problems which would make accessing the medical centre in Kinmel Bay challenging.
“I am also concerned at the problems that this may cause in terms of additional traffic congestion from Towyn into Kinmel Bay during the summer months when many tourists seek to access a GP surgery. At present many of these walk to the Towyn surgery, but closing the facility would probably result in vehicle journeys to Kinmel Bay adding to the summer traffic problems and parking issues already faced around the Kinmel Bay Medical Centre.
“Whilst I can fully appreciate that the existing building has limitations, rather than ceasing to offer a surgery facility in Towyn I would have hoped that consideration could have been given to operating from an alternative premises instead. ”
