Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has expressed disappointment at today’s announcement that the tax office in Colwyn Bay is to close.
A letter to Darren from HM Revenue and Customs confirming the closure states:
“I am writing to inform you that we are today confirming closure dates for 12 of our offices, including Government Buildings, Colwyn Bay.
“We have made this decision after a consultation – which ran from 5 June to 5 August – on when to close these offices, as they do not fit our medium to long-term plans. As well as consulting 530 staff working in these offices, and departmental trade unions, we sought views from a range of interested groups.
“The two main areas of feedback from the consultation were: the impact on the local economy of a loss of public sector jobs; and uncertainty over the future of our people currently based in these locations. However, after careful consideration, we have made the decision to close all 12 locations by December 2015.”
Darren said:
“I’m very disappointed that HMRC have taken the decision to close their Colwyn Bay branch. The news will come as a devastating blow to all the employees and their families.
He added: “Whilst HMRC have confirmed that all 12 branches will be closed by December next year, they have not as yet indicated a date for the Colwyn Bay closure. I trust that they will now stick to their word in supporting staff and giving them priority status as they search for new roles.”
