Clwyd West Assembly Member Darren Millar is calling on Conwy County Borough Council to withdraw proposals for a gypsy/traveller transit site in St George, near Abergele.
Darren hasbeen contacted by many constituents with concerns about the proposals currently being considered by the Council to establish a gypsy/traveller transit site near St George.
Darren has written to the Council Leader, Cllr Dilwyn Roberts, highlighting objections to the proposals and urging the local authority to hold fire on any decisions until residents have had the opportunity to air their views at a public meeting he has arranged to take place on January 9th.
His letter states:
“Please note my strong objections to the provision of a gypsy/traveller transit site at this location, which serves as a gateway from the A55 to the tourist hotspots in the east of the County Borough and is in close proximity to a number of residential areas.
“It is my understanding that the recent Gypsy and Traveller Accommodation Needs Assessment (GTANA) for the North Wales area recommended that transit sites be provided for on a regional and collaborative basis. As collaboration with neighbouring Local Authorities on this issue has yet to take place, I am firmly of the opinion that the identification and allocation of a site by Conwy is premature. I would therefore request that Conwy withdraw any proposals to designate a gypsy/traveller transit site until a regional approach has been fully explored.
“In the meantime, I believe that it is important to ensure that the views of local residents be considered at the earliest opportunity. I have therefore arranged with Abergele Town Council for a public meeting to take place at 7pm on Friday, 9th January in St George Village Hall.”
