Commenting on confirmation by the Betsi Cadwaladr University Health Board of a police investigation into patient safety and care allegations on the Tawel Fan mental health ward at Glan Clwyd Hospital in North Wales, Darren Millar AM, Shadow Minister for Health, said:
"This news will be a cause of deep concern for patients and their families and I trust that they will be kept informed of any developments in due course.
"Every hospital patient in the Welsh NHS deserves to have access to high quality care and to be treated with dignity and respect. If that has not been the case here then health chiefs need to find out what went wrong and put it right for the future.
"Having spoken to the Chief Executive I am satisfied that the referral of this matter to North Wales Police was the right thing to do and that the health board is taking appropriate steps to safeguard patient interests at this time."
