Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has called on the Welsh Government to ensure that all alternatives to the demolition of Colwyn Bay Pier are fully explored prior to any decision by Ministers on Conwy County Borough Council’s plans to seek permission to demolish the pier.
The town’s Victoria Pier is the subject of a dispute between Conwy County Council, who want to demolish the ageing structure, and Colwyn Victoria Pier Trust, who want to redevelop it for community use.
The council says the pier is beyond repair and announced plans to demolish the majority of the grade II listed boardwalk last week, but the Pier Trust maintains that three engineers have contradicted the authority’s findings.
Darren, who raised the matter in the Sennedd this week, said:
“I agree the pier has been an eyesore on the waterfront in Colwyn Bay for far too long and is letting the town’s regeneration efforts down, but given the importance of the pier to the heritage of Colwyn Bay and the prominent position it has on the local waterfront, it would be wrong to steam ahead with plans for demolition without considering every possible alternative.
“I have therefore asked the Welsh Government for assurances that all avenues will be fully explored before Ministers make any decisions. Many of my constituents want to see the pier restored to its former glory and I will continue to fight for this.”
