Clwyd West AM Darren Millar has condemned today’s decision by Denbighshire County Council to consult again on the closure of Ysgol Llanbedr, just weeks after the Education Minister overturned their previous decision.
Members of Denbighshire's Cabinet have voted in favour of starting a consultation with the Church in Wales on the proposal to close the 150 year old school.
The original proposal was to close Ysgol Llanbedr as of the 31st of August 2014 and transfer existing pupils to Ysgol Borthyn, Ruthin, but at the end of January 2015, the Minister, Huw Lewis AM, gave his decision and refused the proposal.
Darren, who supported the last campaign to save this school, is urging locals to keep up the pressure with the new campaign.
He said:
“I am very disappointed that Denbighshire County Council have decided to carry out a further consultation on the closure of Ysgol Llanbedr and that we find ourselves with yet another battle on our hands.
“It is crucial that we do not allow such setbacks, as major as they may be, deter us and instead we stay strong to continue this fight.
“Ysgol Llanbedr is a truly excellent school which deserves to be saved and we must all now come together again to contest these latest proposals.”
Cllr Huw Williams said:
“I am angry that the Council is resurrecting its plans so soon after the Minister's decision. Only three weeks ago we were celebrating, now we must conjure up the strength to continue fighting. The campaigners did a fantastic job last time and I am sure they will again – this school means too much for them not to put up a strong fight.”
Bishop Gregory of St Asaph has also criticised the Council's plans.
